Point taken John. I have only been here for less than 10 years and you probably have indeed been to more council meetings than I. I still love it here. I did vote in the last election but never really saw any better alternatives. Maybe at election time you can make some recommendations.
You are right about my rose coloured glasses though, I do go through my life looking for the good things in life. I have lived in and out of the city and have found people everywhere who were nasty, rude, law breakers, grow house operators, the type to ride their bike on the sidewalk and knock people over and I have come to the conclusion that you cannot escape it if you want to live among society.
I do see the things that could be done, I guess I had such an emotional response to your blog because I really am sick and tired of hearing about the hill. I betcha that whoever came up with the great idea also regrets it--but I wonder what that persons personal agenda was?

I would just say to Avery (comment above) "open your eyes" All the good things that you say about the town were true some time ago but it has changed lately. I have been in and around here since the 1940's and I saw it develop into what we used to refer to as "heaven". But have you really looked lately ..? The lake is more beautiful than ever, and the people are some of the friendliest and most charitable in the world but, however, if you took off the rose coloured glasses and opened your eyes you may see some of the repairable flaws that have developed lately e.g., the homes decorated with the rusting bodies of old cars or discarded snow machines or the last two sofas or open trash fires or piles of garbage put out in front of two strip malls every Saturday for collection on Monday or Tuesday . The problem is the bi-laws that are not being enforced (already on the books). Just as an example I had my grandchildren visiting over March break and had to send them home because the smoke from my contractor neighbour burning debris in his yard was so bad it was causing the children to be ill (coughing and wheezing and trouble catching breath)... My wife was knocked flat on her face on Metro Road by a 200 pound cyclist while walking on the sidewalk (last October and nothing done yet) .... I would bet that I have been to more council meetings than you ever have and I am not trying to run down this town but only to provoke the officials to the point where they will do their job and return this town to the former beauty it had (only about 8 years ago) when we thought it was heaven.... I say "stop sticking up for people that are not doing their job and demand a level of service and intelligence that justifies the existence of this ever growing group of "town officials"". If in doubt ask a senior! You could also serve, in this town, by realizing that contrary to the belief of some it is not trashing the town by trying to get action out of elected officials especially when you have tried to get some positive action from them through years of speaking out and letter writing ..... The magic of the group running this town is that they have convinced most of the people that anyone who speaks against them (even if they are correct) is some kind of a traitor or malcontent (to this town) or is doing a disservice to the people when they are really speaking out on behalf of all and risking scorn and retaliation for their efforts. .....
This is the place where I played as a kid, brought my children and grandchildren to so they could escape "The Big Smoke" on weekends and then chose as my first investment into recreational property when the opportunity arose and then I chose to stay here through retirement all because I thought this was the finest place around to "live" in. What I tell you now is that over the last eight to ten years it appears that the dream is decaying and the worst part is this would all be preventible with politicians and leaders that were more concerned with the "good of the people" than their own personal agendas.

Ok, I thought the hill was a really really great idea when they had the initial concept, why pay to have our waste dirt hauled away when we can make it fun for the kids of the town and maybe bring others to our wonderful place. I dont know the logistics of why it has not come to fruition, too bad. Too bad they didnt just leave a moderate sized hill and let the kids toboggon.

I really take offence to the statement that we are "STUCK" here. We are so lucky to have wonderful people all around Georgina. I can drive from the north end of town to the south end in 8 minutes and I dont have to get backed up in "Super Store" traffic. I am sick and tired of people complaining...go to the odd council meeting, help someone for free, get involved rather than sitting at your computer complaining--guaranteed you will meet some great town residents who choose to be here.

This is a hard time for our town, with so many "auto parts" employees losing their jobs times will be tough here but complaining will only make things feel worse.

And holy cow,you want to be American right now? Are you kidding? The laws their banks and financial institutions have had in place have managed to oust whole towns out of their homes because they were allowed to borrow more money against their properties than they were worth! Talk about brainless...

These people were elected to govern, not to gouge the residents out of their hard earned money on a pipe dream. If they did this in private industry they would be fired. Too bad we cannot fire this council. Time to change the election act so that the people who pay these "so called leaders" (we the taxpayers)can get rid of them for being incompitent. What happened to "for the people by the people" Oh! that is American. How many more brainless projects do they have coming up ?????

I think "Rose & Larry" are being harsh on Canadian labour and unions. They did not really propose an alternate solution and just messed with the original one.

I like the idea BUT only if the unions give back a little. We make sub-standard auto's compared to the imports (who actually produce a good percentage with Canadian labour) and to me that is a huge part as to why the $$ of the big 3 are so high! By agreeing to not take a pay hike is ridiculous. Take a hit like the majority of Canadians are and the prices of those autos would come back to earth! Maybe we would only require $ 5,000 vouchers... I'm jaded (no pun intended)....The North American auto market is in trouble for 3 reasons in my eyes...higher than normal labour rates, pension buy-outs from past errors and gross mis-management. Fix your industry up from with-in and then watch the support grow...Until then, let's use our tax dollars for other, more progressive and outside the box, remedies! Our Gov't has to put serious restrictions on that bailout total...It cannot be used for buy-outs !!
